The Kansas City Royals joined Major League Baseball (MLB) as an expansion team in 1969. The franchise struggled to stay above .500 during its first few seasons, breaking the 100-win mark for the first time in 1977. Not long after, a Royals squad that went 97-65 over the course of the 1980 regular season made a strong run to the World Series, pushing Mike Schmidt and the eventual champion Philadelphia Phillies to six games.

In 1985, the Royals brought Kansas City fans their first MLB championship. The top ranked team in the American League began their post-season campaign by taking on the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series (ALCS), falling into a three-to-one series hole before holding Toronto to just five runs over the last three games to claim the series in seven. Kansas City staged another improbable three-to-one series comeback against the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, this time winning the final three games by a combined score of 19-2.

Royals fans suffered a long playoff drought following the team’s first title, but the wait proved worth it. After a third place Royals team pushed the San Francisco Giants to seven games in 2014, the 2015 team scored a decisive four-to-one series victory over the New York Mets. There was little drama this time around, and the Royals delivered the city its second championship exactly 30 years after the first.
